INSTALLING THE 4DTV

1. If you are replacing your existing IRD with a 4DTV, before disconnecting your old unit, position your dish to G1 check ch 11 and ch12 to make sure you get no static. Disconnect your old unit then connect the 4DTV receiver. Refer to the Installation Guide that came with your 4DTV for the correct locations of the Motor, Sensor, Polarizer wires and LNB cables. Connect power to the new unit and turn it on. (Be sure cables are connected to the correct place or you may burn sensors on your dish)

2. Press OPTION 6, 4
Select yes to allow automated guide updated.
Select 2
And set your type of actuator (east or west USA) and LNB. Select STANDARD feed horn for now.

3. Press GO BACK

4. Press 3 to get to the east/west limits screen. Now you have a choice. You can set the limits of motion or allow the limits to be set as you program your satellites. Press 3 to get to the Program Satellites screen.  Be careful when setting the limits you could damage the dish, actuator, roof, etc. If in doubt call a dealer to come do this for you. *

5. Use the arrow keys on the remote control and position the yellow cursor over the G1 tile then press ENTER.

6. You are now shown the Satellite Adjustment screen. Because the 4DTV always puts you on channel 1 when you program a satellite you may want to change to a known channel of the satellite you intend to identify as the satellite you are on.

7. If needed, press 2 (or use the down-arrow) to select dish position control.

8. Use the east or west arrows buttons to move the dish until you locate the desired signal. The dish should already be close to G1 if it was left at this position before installation. Once you have found the correct "known" channel on the selected satellite, adjust the dish position to maximize quality.

9. Press 4 (or arrow-down) to Skew Adjust. Adjust the skew to maximize quality. You may choose to use the auto skew feature by pressing 5 (or arrow-down).

10. Check a horz and a vert ch. On G1 check ch 11 and 12

12. To save the settings press GO BACK and ENTER. You are now back at the satellite chart to select the next sat to be programmed in. Do NOT continue yet. Press VIEW then change to channel 3.

13. Press OPTION 6, 5. At the bottom-right of the screen you should notice the number in the box marked "Channels" increasing. This is called Channel Mapping . Once the unit has stopped counting (currently there are over 4500 channels) it has completed downloading the channel maps.
Note:   If you program G1 in first and sit on channel 3 as said above, the unit will map every digital channel on every satellite as you program them. If you start on another satellite like G5 it will be harder to program. Be sure you wait long enough.

14. Resume programming satellites by pressing OPTION 6, 4, 4. Select the next satellite until you have programmed the satellites that you desire. If you would like the 4DTV to auto locate the satellites for you, you will need to manually program at least three satellites, one in the middle of the arc, and one furthest East (now S3) and West (C1) satellite. As you're locating and programming S3 and C1 satellites write down their dish positions then go back and set the east/west limits. Press GO BACK until you come back to the East/West Limit screen. Press 1 to select East limit then use the E/W arrows to change the numbers to those that you have noted for the far easterly satellite (S3). Set the east limit to a few counts east of S3. Press 2 for West limit and repeat, using satellite C1's position. Set the limits to a few counts west of the satellite location for C1. Press VIEW to exit screen.

15. To program the remaining satellites you can begin using the auto dish positioner feature. Press OPTION 6, 4, 4. To enter the Program Satellites menu. Select the desired satellite and press ENTER, now look at line 1, this is the 4DTV's automatic calculation ("best guess") of the location of your satellite selection. Highlight this then press ENTER and let the dish move to this location. Repeat the tuning procedure in steps 10, 11 and 12.Refer to the Current Satellite Chart for satellite information and locations.

ACTIVATE THE PROGRAMMING AND IPG

Now that the channels have been mapped it's time to add the programming. Return to G1/3, you will see a grey screen saying: "cannot find channel, continuing to search". This is normal, it's suppose to say that. To activate your programming you will provide us your your Digital Unit ID. Press OPTION 6, 5. The unit ID is on line A. Also on this screen is a trip counter. After you order your programming, watch the trip counter, when it changes press VIEW then GUIDE. In a few minutes he screen will change and the Guide will display. You will also need to take a hit on a video cipher channel for the analog programming to authorize.

ADDITIONAL TUNING NEEDED FOR
HBO/CINEMAX MOUNTAIN, WEST AND OTHERS.

Extra Tuning May Be Required To Receive HBO/Cinemax Mountain and West Channels
Some channels are a little harder to receive. These HBO and Cinemax channels, some of the Starz! channels and satellite X7 use a tighter compression configuration which makes them more difficult to receive without manually adjusting the skew and/or dish position. If you are not receiving a picture on any digital channel nut instead are seeing a message saying "cannot find channel, continuing to search" press OPTION, 6,4,4, ENTER then look at the Signal Quality (bottom-right) level. This number will probably read 0. Play with the dish position and the skew in small increments to achieve the highest quality. When you are satisfied with the picture or signal reading, press GO BACK then ENTER to save the adjustments when you are satisfied with the picture. Note: You will see a Skew adjustment only if you have an LNB, if you have a LNBF you may not be able to properly tune these channels.

SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS / UPGRADES:

One of the advantages of the 4DTV receiver is it's ability to add software updates after the receiver has been installed. Downloads will occur when the receiver is turned off and will be relatively transparent. Downloads are announced to the customers by electronic messages sent to the receiver telling the customer about the download. The current version of the software is 6D. The units "as they are shipped" are at 61 and some refurbished units are still at 027 so a software upgrade will need to be done the first night the unit is installed. After installing a new unit, turn the 4DTV receiver to G1/3 and turn it off for about 20 minutes. This will force the unit to start the preamble that will update the unit to version 00006D in one night rather than 2. Turn the unit on and use it as you will. That night, turn the receiver to G1/3 and turn it off for the night. The unit will update automatically to version 00006D. This will only need to be done once, even if the unit is later reset back to the factory settings.

WHEN TO PULL THE POWER CORD FROM THEM 4DTV RECEIVER: (Now called SOFT RESET)

DANGER Receiver must be turned off before Unplugged!
If you have a DSR 920 you are advised not to unplug the receiver!
Receiver must be on G1 before being unplugged!

There will be a few instances where you will need to pull the power cord from the 4DTV.  If you think the receiver is not responding to requests for guide or is not responding to the remote control. Or if new channels have been added and you don't want to wait for a automated remap to take place. After the unit is plugged in or reset: The IRD's front panel blanks the screen for a short time to initialize its internal hardware and software, similar to a personal computer boot-up. Due to the complexities of the 4DTV, this can take approximately 60 seconds.
DO NOT TURN THE UNIT ON! You must wait 30 mins before turning on the receiver. This will force it to redownload the guide from G1.

Again you are warned that some DSR 920 receivers have failed to reboot after being unplugged so you do this at your own risk. However if you have one of these bad receivers it will likely fail anyway the first time your power goes off.

NO IPG?

Go to G1 ch 3, then press GUIDE. If the screen color is "split" (dark color over a light color), this means you are subscribed to the guide. Notice the "PROCESSING YOUR REQUEST..." is in a different spot. Be patient, in about 3 minutes or so you will have your guide. If the screen is pulsing in and out or flashing between various colors or is just a one color screen saying "PROCESSING YOUR REQUEST", check the positioning of G1. Maybe it just needs to be moved East or West a little.

THE 4DTV FORGETS THE SATELLITE POSITIONS:

The receiver goes close to where the satellite is located but does not return to the correct position. This is an intermittent problem that does not occur within a certain brand or size or actuator. There are 2 fixes for this problem.
Take an unused wire from the ribbon cable and connect one end of it to a good ground in the actuator motor case then attach the other end to the ground post on the back of the 4DTV.
The other option is to shim the sensor out a little more.

PICTURE FLASHING IN AND OUT:

When tuning in satellites sometimes a picture "flashes" in and out, but will not lock. The green light does not come on when this happens, but there is obviously something there. --What you are seeing is the analog transponder flashing in. All digital channels are defined to point to actual satellite transponders. Assuming their is a digital signal there, and it is configured with the same Symbol Rate and FEC as defined in the map, the receiver will lock onto the digital signal. If there is no digital signal there, or it is configured differently than defined, the receiver will go into acquisition recovery, which means it will begin searching all possible configurations to lock into something. This takes several minutes due to the number of different possibilities. Eventually it will find the correct configuration and will lock in. This is why you will receive analog channels with a digital 3 digit number on some generic satellites.

PROGRAMMING A SATELLITE THAT IS NOT LISTED ON THE PROGRAM SATELLITES SCREEN:

Programming a satellite that is not listed on the Program Satellites screen?:
There are extra satellites in the 4dtv that have generic formats: KA, KB, KC, KD, KE, KF, KG, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, Cf and CG these formats are for use on any non-listed satellite in the installation menu. The longer you have your 4DTV the more you will experiment by programming these in various places.

CHANNEL TUNING:

No HBO/MAX (7.5' dish). This is not unusual, because of the ratio of the compression, the HBO Mountain and West feeds are low in signal to noise ratio and the smaller dish just doesn't have the gain or the focus to eliminate interference from adjacent satellites (degradation of s/n as opposed to signal strength as such). You should be able to make G1 play on a 7.5 but you need to have it very well aligned. A good performing LNB will make a big difference in the signal quality.

TUNING IN WMNB ON SBS-5*

The 4DTV receiver does not have a video polarity switch which is needed for WMNB on SBS-5, here is how you can fix that. Change to G9/1 (which is co-located with SBS-5). Press the OPTION button, then 6, 7, 7, 8 and then 1. In the frequency field enter 1130.000 MHz and then highlight the Ku block then press ENTER. Move the cursor to TUNE and press Enter. You should get the picture (the video is unclamped). You might have to peak the dish. Next, change the audio to 5.40 MHz. Kittlesen

HIDDEN MENUS OPTION 6, 7, 7, 8
This is the most important menu to use when tuning a direct frequency. You can enter an IF frequency, change polarity, switch between C/Ku band and move the dish. This menu is very helpful when you know the frequency you are looking for.

OPTION 6, 0, 5
This is a screen for DC2 and receiver diagnostic and settings.

If you've wondered what the info on the OPTION 6, 5 screen was, here it is:
Line A: Digital Unit ID (We need this number)
Line B: Digital Receiver Number (unused)
Line C: Authorization Status:
Line J: Polarity
Line G: Quality between 0 and 139 with 0 being the best and 139 being the worst.
Line H: Current Version: should be at 00006D right now.
Line I: Target version: displays the next upgrade version. Should be at 000000 right now
Channels (Lower right corner): tells the number of virtual channels available
Trip Counter (Lower left corner) displays the number of counts since the last update from the service provider.
